Weatherization

Our Weatherization Assistance Program is designed to help reduce energy consumption by making your home more energy efficient. The program is not a renovation program; therefore, the program does not address cosmetic improvements, or improvements which do not directly affect the heating and cooling of your home.

How does it help?

By reducing the amount of electricity or gas you use, you will save yourself money. The program limits the amount of money that can be spent on a home for weatherization improvements. Weatherization measures completed on the home will vary based on the condition of the home. An assessment will be made of the home to identify the location of cracks, holes and spaces where air escapes.

What can I do on my own to save energy?

  • Add insulation to attics, walls, or floors to greatly reduce the heating and cooling costs in your home.

  • Caulking and patching holes in the structure of your home can create a barrier between the interior and exterior of your home where the air is escaping.

  • Replace your air conditioners return air filter monthly.

  • Close drapes or blinds to reduce solar heat or install solar screens.

  • Replace old light bulbs with CFL or LED bulbs. They use 50%-75% less energy!

  • Set your water heater to 120 degrees and install a hot water heater insulation blanket.

  • Weather strip exterior door jambs.

  • Replace old appliances with Energy Star efficient models.

  • Use washers, dryers, and dishwashers at night rather than during the heat of the day.

  • Install a programmable thermostat. Programmable thermostats can store and repeat multiple daily settings.

  • Set your thermostat higher in the summer and lower in the winter when you are away from home. This small change can have a big impact!
