Community Action, Inc. is currently applying for a
grant through Texas Department of Housing and
Community Affairs to assist low-income individuals
in becoming self-sufficient. The program will be
called "ECHO", Empowering Client to Help Oneself.
ECHO will be a 12 month program designed to assist
individuals in obtaining education that will enable
them to become employed and return to their
communities as empowered citizens. The program
plans to target Educational, Housing, Community
Involvement, and Job Training needs.
Scholarships or stipends will vary with each client
and may include but are not limited to child care,
rent subsidy, utility assistance, books or training
materials, uniforms, gas, car repair, tires and
tuition subsidy. Preference will be given to
students needing only one year to complete their
course of study. Each client will be required
to meet with the ECHO case manager on a monthly
basis to work on goal planning and will be required
to maintain a 3.0 grade point average.
Also required will be attendance at a 12-week
training course training course entitled Step Up To
Leadership. This program designed for
Community Action Agencies and their clients has as
its main purpose the development of grassroots
leadership skills and the encouragement of active
involvement in the community. The goal of the
program is to empower the clients of Community
Action to take on more leadership roles within their
communities. Attendance will be mandatory and
two 12-week sessions will be offered.
Childcare stipends and mileage to attend will be
provided to the ECHO participants.
